SSL’s Gluten-free Top Picks of the Week: Freschetta Pizza, Sahale Snacks, and Bobo’s Oat Bars

20150318_135405-1_resizedHey, y’all! Welcome to Sweet Sorghum Living–a place to sit a spell with a good cup of coffee and enjoy good conversation about everything from handmade goodness to gluten-free goodies. Today on the blog, we are chatting about this week’s gluten-free top picks–which is all about pizza, pecans, and Bobo’s deliciousness.

First up, pizza. Y’all know how much I love pizza. Honestly, it is my favorite food group *wink* A friend of mine, Rachel–who is an amazing artisan, shared Freschetta Gluten Free pizza with me. I had no idea that Freschetta had such an option–and I am so glad that Rachel told me about it. Overall, the flavor is good, and the crust is delicious and crispy–but I must warn you to watch it while it cooks because it seems to burn quickly. Like from almost done to super done in a matter of a couple of minutes!! For a snacking pizza, this one is great, but to me–it does not have that “meal” feel.

P.S. This is not a dairy-free pizza + it does contain soy. It makes me happy to see larger companies embracing the gluten-free demand…but I would love to see larger companies embracing more organic ingredients as well. Support those local, small farms, big companies out there!

20150318_135438-1_resizedNext up, is nuts *wink* well, just pecans *smile* Sahale Valdosta Pecans make for a perfect crunchy, salty + sweet snack, and they are a great substitute for croutons. I discovered these accidentally at Ingles in Johnson City while checking the snack aisles for new gluten-free goodies to try. There are a few flavor varieties in this brand, but this one by far is my favorite.

20150318_135838-1_resized20150318_135936-1_resizedThe last pick of the day is Bobo’s Oat Bars. My daughter loves these–she eats them for breakfast and for mid-afternoon snacks. They are a perfect on-the-go item that fits easily into a purse or backpack. There are several gluten-free flavors from which to choose, but the peach is one of Abby’s favorites.

20150318_152538-1_resized20150318_152614-1_resized20150318_152602-1_resizedThanks so much for sitting a spell with today as we chatted about the gluten-free top picks of the week. Remember what doesn’t bother me–might bother you–so please, please be careful when trying new foods, and don’t forget to read those labels!

Hey, y’all! Welcome back to Sweet Sorghum Living! If this is your first time visiting, the rules are simple–(1) grab a good cup of coffee (regular or decaf) or a nice glass of wine (2) sit a spell and enjoy good conversation about everything from handmade goodness to DIYs *smile*

Today on the blog, we are chatting about the gluten-free top picks of the week. I have tried to “theme” my top picks in the past–but that is so stressful and no fun! I am more random than “themes”–however, I do enjoy a good theme party. Where was I? Oh, yes. No theme on the blog today. It is all about the random foods I bought and tried since my last gluten-free post. Truly, I wish I could say that I made this giant list–narrowed the list down using research–then planned a special shopping day…but…no.  It is just how my gluten-free life rolls.

And by the way, for all the Celiac nonbelievers out there and for all the gluten-free lifestyle haters–poo on you. *sticking out tongue*

While I am on my soap box…

I am not one to be negative or to get involved in crazy politics and such…but Joy Behar and NASCAR have me in a tizzy. Celiac is real, and it sucks. I have Type 1 diabetes and Celiac. I did not sign up for either one of these diseases. Nor did anyone else that has them. Shame on you, Joy Behar. Bless her heart *in my most Southern Belle accent*

Check out the fabulous blog post “Joy Behar: An Absolute Gluten-Free Train Wreck” by GlutenDude. Well stated, dude, well stated.

Now, if that were not a big enough kick in the pants to what Celiacs have been fighting, NASCAR delivers a big blow to the gut *see what I did there, wink*

I am not going to justify a response to this ad. Once again, GlutenDude has the matter under control. Click here to check out his reaction to this Super Bowl ad.

How does all of this make y’all feel? Please comment on this post because I would love to know! Let’s not remain silent because Celiac and gluten intolerance is real–not baloney. If you feel really fired up and passionate, sign the petition found on GlutenDude.

*Stepping off soap box*

Speaking of gluten intolerance, let’s take a look at this week’s gluten-free top picks–and a big shout out and thank you to all the companies and restaurants who believe *smile*

One of my favorite restaurants in Johnson City is Buffalo Street Deli. They were so sweet and understanding of my having Celiac, so much so, they prepared me this "Meat Mountain"--the gluten-free version of their Carnivore Pizza.

One of my favorite restaurants in Johnson City is Buffalo Street Downtown Deli. They were so sweet and understanding of my having Celiac, so much so, they prepared me this “Meat Mountain”–the gluten-free version of their Carnivore Pizza. It was super delicious, and the best news is they have a gluten-free flatbread that can be used as a pizza crust or wrap!

Alter Eco chocolate bars are my weakness. I just tried this one a few days ago. Oh.My.Goodness.

Thanks so much for sitting a spell with me today as we took a look at the gluten-free top picks of the week. Remember it is very important to read labels and to research a company before trying new foods. Also, what doesn’t bother me might bother you, so be extra cautious when trying new foods and restaurants.

SSL’s Gluten-Free Top Picks of the Week: Whole Foods Market

image

Hey, y’all! Welcome back to the blog. Today, we will be chatting about all my gluten-free favorites at the new Whole Foods Market Asheville. I attended the grand opening yesterday,  and it was fabulous. Lots of folks came out to celebrate and shop. I wandered the aisles with my baskets–one in each hand…purse on my shoulder…Samsung Galaxy Tab on top of the basket that was filled with bottles of wine…the hubby built a really awesome piece for the dining room, and it needed pretty bottles…I will share that with y’all another day *smile* Back to top picks.

I am a huge fan of pizza, junk food, comfort food, and sandwiches. The following photos will support that statement *smile*

SSL’S Gluten-free Top Picks of the Week: Meat and Cheese

image

Hey,y’all! Welcome back to Sweet Sorghum Living. Today on the blog, we are chatting about SSL’s top gluten-free picks of the week. All about meat and cheese. Now, I’m not talking about fresh meat…or going to the butcher shop…because I really don’t like handling raw meat…or cooking. We are discussing the basics like bacon, ham, and American cheese. No fancy, schmancy recipes here *smile*

image

Bacon. It’s a food group. A staple item. A legend. But finding a gluten-free version is a bit tricky. I am not a trusting person. And just because a product doesn’t list a gluten culprit doesn’t mean it is sans gluten. I am a cautious person. So, I read labels. I read labels on items that clearly have GLUTEN-FREE printed on them. One can never be too careful nowadays.

Any who…Smithfield has an all-natural, uncured bacon that is made with sea salt and has no MSG or gluten.

This bacon is perfect for a BLT…I totally recommend Udi’s bread and fresh produce from local farmers *smile*

I discovered this bacon on a recent and rare trip to Walmart. I was needing a few miscellaneous items that I can only find there because our Target in Johnson City is rather small and doesn’t contain a fully stocked market. Oh, it makes me miss Target in Trussville and Hoover. I digress.

image

Turkey bacon. It will never have the fame of its cousin. It won’t have festivals dedicated to it. But I personally like it. And I buy it more than “real” bacon because it has less calories and fat…and I’m not getting any younger and the odds of my starting a serious exercise regimen is slim to none. So, I eat turkey bacon as a way to stay fit. It makes perfect sense…

image

Plainville makes one of the best turkey bacon…turkey bacons?? Is there a plural to bacon? I guess it always needs a friend like “I bought two packages of turkey bacon.” or “Five slices of bacon is really a serving.” Anyway…I’m all over the place today.

Back to turkey bacon…Plainville has a delicious, uncured turkey bacon that contains no gluten or casein. According to the package and some research I did, “Plainville’s turkeys are humanely raised on family-owned farms in a stress-free environment. They are never, ever administered antibiotics and are fed a 100% vegetarian diet free of any animal by-products.”

I get mine at Earth Fare in Johnson City.  It’s great cooked, chopped, and tossed in a gluten-free pasta salad. Great on ham sandwiches and by itself as a snack.

image

I love this ham. So much so, that I bought like 8 packages a couple of days ago because Earth Fare had it on sale. No, I will not be freezing these packages. There’s no need because the little family and I love ham and cheese sandwiches. Hot ones…cold ones. Is there anything better for lunch?

image

Udderly my favorite cheese ever. It is buttery…creamy…yummy. Once you experience Andrew & Everett cheeses, you will never go back to the big brands. It is amazing!

image

Y’all know I am a huge fan of pizza. It’s an easy dinner, and leftover slices are perfect for breakfast. When making my own gluten-free pizza, I use Applegate Uncured Pepperoni. These slices are also great by themselves as a snack or baked in the oven for “pepperoni chips”–I’ve no idea how long I bake them. I just place them on a cookie sheet and bake on 350 degrees until they begin to curl up and look crispy. *smile*

image

Fiorucci is my go-to salame for pizza and snack meat trays. It’s gluten-free and 100% natural. Which is sad that we have to look for and demand 100% natural foods. When a long time ago, food was all natural. Chemicals help us preserve food for extended periods and create more food faster…blah…blah. Personally, I like my meat 100% natural and not full of antibiotics and ingredients that I can’t pronounce without using my “Hooked on Phonics”…

image

Thanks for sitting a spell with me today as we toured my meat and cheese drawer. Now, I’m off to make a BLT and dine on the front porch.
